RHEDA CITY: THE PROVEN BALLASTLESS TRACK SYSTEM FOR URBAN TRANSIT
Ballastless track systems combine high performance with seamless integration into the urban environment.
They are suitable for tram, light rail and metro systems, offering outstanding ride comfort, safety and minimal maintenance requirements. Depending on the specific application, they can be covered with asphalt, concrete or paving. Green tracks also create additional green spaces and contribute to a more pleasant urban climate.
RHEDA CITY is a particularly robust, precise and virtually maintenance-free system for modern Urban Transit. Its simple design, high load-bearing capacity and flexible configuration make it a versatile solution for urban environments.
For projects with a particular focus on an attractive green appearance, RHEDA CITY GREEN provides the ideal solution. It combines high-performance rail infrastructure with a forward-looking and appealing design for public spaces.
The system’s technical design and operating principle are explained in detail below.
SOLUTIONS FOR URBAN TRANSITRHEDA CITY
METRO
Metro systems form the backbone of urban mobility. They connect different parts of a city quickly, safely and reliably, placing high demands on both infrastructure and track systems. In underground environments in particular, robust, low-maintenance systems are essential to ensuring consistently high availability. This is where RHEDA CITY comes into play.
Ballastless track is therefore becoming increasingly established in modern metro construction. Its long service life, low maintenance requirements and efficient construction processes make it the preferred solution for many operators. With RHEDA CITY, RAILONE offers one of the most established systems for this field of application. Continuously developed over nearly three decades, it now covers all typical applications in tunnels, on bridges and on other engineering structures.
TRAM
Trams are among the most popular modes of transport in urban areas. Compared with buses, they offer greater transport capacity and better environmental performance. As a result, many cities have rebuilt or significantly expanded their tram networks in recent years, repeatedly choosing the versatile RHEDA CITY ballastless track system.
Today, ballastless track is a proven and cost-effective solution for tram systems and has become an established alternative to ballasted track. RHEDA CITY is based on tried-and-tested technology and has been further developed in close cooperation with public transport operators to meet the specific requirements of urban environments.
With more than 25 years of operational experience, RHEDA CITY is one of the most widely used track solutions for tram systems. It can be flexibly adapted to different structural conditions and multimodal traffic areas, providing a high level of reliability across a wide range of applications.
THE CORE COMPONENTS OF RHEDA CITY
The RHEDA CITY system is based on a simple, standardized design comprising two main components that can be adapted and supplemented depending on the application. This clear structure simplifies planning, construction and tendering for public transport operators.
The core system components are:
- Bi-block sleepers with lattice girder reinforcement: for simple, cost-effective and precise rail positioning during installation, construction and operation
- Load-bearing cast-in-place concrete track slab: designed to accommodate traffic and rail loads while providing a high degree of adaptability, particularly in confined urban environments
BALLASTLESS TRACKS: ARCHITECTURE FOR THE URBAN ENVIROMENT
Ballastless track systems integrate seamlessly into traffic flows and the urban landscape, whether used for tram, suburban rail or metro lines. Systems covered with asphalt or paving can also be shared by buses and private vehicles. Green tracks offer an attractive alternative by adding valuable green space to the urban environment.
Ballastless track systems also provide outstanding ride comfort, high levels of safety and low maintenance requirements. In every application, they enhance Urban Transit and improve infrastructure quality. The future of urban mobility starts here!
RHEDA CITY - MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY FOR DIFFERENT RAIL PROFILES, TRACK GAUGES, FASTENING SYSTEMS, TURNOUTS AND SPECIAL DESIGNS
Thanks to its versatile design, the system can be adapted to virtually all grooved and Vignoles rail profiles, track gauges and fastening systems. Continuous rail support is also possible.
For covered track, rail encapsulation systems and various chamber filling elements can be used depending on the specific requirements. This allows even stringent requirements for stray current control and noise protection to be met.
RHEDA CITY also provides solutions for different types of turnouts and special applications, including multi-rail systems. For sensitive urban areas, the system can also be designed as a mass-spring system with elastic support of the concrete base slab to specifically reduce noise and vibration emissions.
Ballastless track system for vegetation depths of 50 to 300 mm, suitable for a wide range of aesthetic and biological requirements for green tracks
Resistant to stray currents in accordance with EN 50122 and other relevant standards, even when the track is fully covered up to the top of the rail
High-quality visual solutions, including designs with an exposed rail head for rail maintenance
Enhanced corrosion protection for the rail fastening system through coated metal components and additional structural measures within the track system
Ample design flexibility for green spaces between and alongside the rails
Easy maintenance of the vegetation, rails and rail fastening systems
