RAILONE

MECCA–MEDINA, SAUDI ARABIA

RHEDA 2000® Protects Against Sand Accumulation

For a high-speed line through the desert regions of Saudi Arabia, RAILONE supplied approximately 210,000 RHEDA 2000® sleepers and 500,000 sleepers for ballasted track, designed for speeds of up to 320 km/h. RAILONE also supported the project team on site with engineering services and customised solutions for ballastless track and turnouts.

Construction of the first high-speed railway line through the desert began in 2011, connecting the two holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Millions of pilgrims and tourists can now travel the 444-kilometre route in approximately two hours. Around a quarter of the line is at risk from drifting sand, which led to the selection of the proven RHEDA 2000® system with its low maintenance requirements and extensive track record.

RAILONE supplied approximately 210,000 RHEDA 2000® sleepers, around 500,000 sleepers for ballasted track from its production plant in Ha’il, as well as sleepers for high-speed turnouts in ballastless track. The project team also received on-site engineering support for planning, construction and maintenance. The line was officially opened in January 2018.
